Hervey Bay Rural clinical School
Opportunities
The Hervey Bay RCS is situated in a quiet and friendly coastal town 300 km north of Brisbane. Its neighbouring town is Maryborough, and together they form the Fraser Coast region, populated by 80,000 people. The traditional owners of the land are the Butchulla people.

Hervey Bay is home to 13 third year and 12 fourth year (final year) medical students. Placements are completed across a number of sites including Hervey Bay Hospital, Maryborough Hospital, St Stephen’s Hospital, and local community healthcare providers. All rotations are offered within the Fraser Coast, with medical specialty options including oncology, renal medicine, and rehabilitation medicine. The RCS proudly runs a clinical simulation facility, mock ward, clinical simulation lab, and a library, allowing students to proactice their skills both on and off the wards.

Accommodation

Student accommodation is provided across two townhouse complexes, each less than a 10 minute drive to the main hospitals in Hervey Bay. They are both fully furnished and include internet access.

What to do

Hervey Bay is a popular tourist location, both as a gateway to Fraser Island and independently for the amazing whale watching opportunities on the coast. Camping, fishing, and bushwalking are popular with locals and tourists alike, and provide a great escape from the clinical environment for medical students. Students also partake in the inter-RCS sports competition with Bundaberg, creating a friendly yet competitive spirit between the clinical schools.
