Assisted 1st year electives in rural and regional Australia

Start Date/Time: Thursday, July 29, 2010 11:30 AM
End Date/Time: Thursday, July 29, 2010 12:30 PM
Recurring Event: One time event
Description:

Assisted 1st year electives in rural and regional Australia

It's a new project we're running as a club, we're excited about it and we'd love you to be a part!

What we offer:

1. Extensive, hands-on training prior to your elective (but after your exams).  You've five weeks to complete your elective post exams so we'll be training you in Brisbane during that first week and then you'll complete your elective over the remaining four weeks.
2. De-brief post elective in Brisbane which, though not compulsory, is recommended and will give you a chance to report back before we head out to dine and make much merriment.
3. Assistance in locating a suitable elective location.  We're currently compiling a list with the support of the SoM, our alumni and our sponsors.  This'll be available at the meeting this Thursday (29/7).

What you need to do to participate:

1. Organise the elective!  We'll give you assistance where we can but ultimately it'll be you contacting the doctor/practice to arrange it.  This should be made easier by the fact you can say (and we'll give you a substantive letter if need be) that the week prior to coming to them, you'll have been trained to perform an ECG, take basic obs, cannulate/administer IV fluid, suture, dress wounds... and much more!
2. Organise it within rural or regional Australia.  Eligible locations basically include everywhere except Brisbane, the Sunshine or Gold Coasts and Noosa and their equivalents in other states.  John Flynn scholarship holders are encouraged to have a chat with us about how we can fit in with your obligations.
3. Become a TROHPIQ member if you're not already.  We're easily the best rural health club in Australia - other clubs want to be us and their members want to be with us.

Where to go from here:

Come have a chat to us at a meeting/info session this Thursday (29/7) between 11:30 and 12:30 on level 4 of your PBL building.  That is, if your PBL is from 10-12, come after PBL.  If your PBL is from 12-2, come beforehand.

Dr. Kathy Williams and I will be there and we'll have information on exactly what we'll be teaching you in that first week and also contact details for practices in rural and regional Australia.  We can obviously answer any questions you have as well.

To register your interest or if you want to know more, please
click here and complete a very quick Google form and feel free to reply to this if you've any questions.

Regards,

Andrew Evans (MBBS II)
